Chinese authorities deployed mass COVID-19 testing and boosted construction of makeshift hospitals as COVID-19 infections surge across the country state television reported Friday.

The country’s national health authority confirmed 2.416 new coronavirus cases on March 17, compared with 1.317 a day earlier.

In northern Jilin province, residents were seen queuing up in chilly weather at a makeshift COVID-19 testing centre.

This is the worst outbreak of COVID-19 in China since the virus first emerged in Wuhan.
