More than 3 million people have fled Ukraine since the Russian invasion that started on February 24, 2022, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Neighbouring Poland has taken in the most refugees so far, accepting more than 1.8 million women, children and men. Many other Ukrainians have fled to nearby Romania, Moldova, Hungary, Slovakia as well as more distant nations including the US and Canada. The UNHCR is now planning a response to support about 4 million refugees, but admits the estimated figure is likely to increase.
