To counter propaganda and a domestic media blackout about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, a group of Lithuanians have launched a #CallRussia initiative to get Russian speakers in other countries to cold-call citizens in Russia. During their phone conversations, the volunteers try to challenge Moscow’s narrative about the war, which most Russians only learn about from state-controlled media. Independent news outlets have closed in Russia as the government instituted a law on March 4, 2022, criminalising the spread of what it considers “fake” information. Russia's media crackdown is also meant to discourage protests, but thousands of anti-war demonstrators have been arrested across Russia.
