Russia-Ukraine conflict: Chelsea FC among Abramovich sanctions frozen by Britain

CA, 11 Mar 2022
European and world soccer championship team Chelsea F.C. was among the assets of Roman Abramovich frozen by the British government on Thursday after he was sanctioned for his close relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

British Sports and Culture Minister Nadine Dorries said Thursday that Abramovich would not be able to benefit from the sale of the club.

Team activities from selling new tickets to signing players were instantly restricted, though Dorries said existing ticket holders would still be able to attend matches.

Abramovich, who bought Chelsea in 2003 for a reported 140 million pounds, put the club up for sale last week. He said proceeds would go to a foundation started by him for the victims of Russia’s war in Ukraine.
