MLB, players fail to reach agreement to end lockout as league cancels opening day games
CA, 02 Mar 2022
Major League Baseball cancelled opening day on Tuesday, with Commissioner Rob Manfred announcing the sport scrapped regular-season games after the league and the Players' Association was unable to reach a deal to end its lockout before the management's deadline.
Manfred also said that the league had never used the phrase "last, best and final offer" with the union, saying they said it was their best offer prior to the deadline.
"Our negotiations are deadlocked right now, but that's different than using the legal term impasse and I'm not going to do that."
Players Association executive director Tony Clark said players are continuing to train, so they can play as soon as a deal is made, but added the game of baseball has been damaged.
"A lockout is the ultimate economic weapon," he said Tuesday.
