Russia-Ukraine conflict: Canada's deputy PM provides update on country's response to war | LIVE

CA, 02 Mar 2022
Canada's Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland will hold a briefing after the government committed an additional $100 million in humanitarian assistance for Ukraine as its war with Russia rages on.

Furthermore, Ottawa is planning to ban Russian-owned or registered ships and fishing vessels from entering Canadian ports and internal waters.

Freeland will be joined by the Minister of National Defence, Anita Anand, and the Minister of International Development and Minister responsible for the Pacific Economic Development Agency of Canada, Harjit S. Sajjan.

On Monday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the country was set to send more lethal aid in the form of anti-tank weapon systems and more ammunition to Ukraine in the coming days.

Trudeau also announced that Canada intends to ban crude oil imports from Russia, saying while Canada has imported "very little amounts" in recent years, the measure "sends a powerful measure" as the industry makes up one-third of Russia's federal budget revenues.

New sanctions were also announced during Monday's briefing, with Trudeau and Freeland outlining that Canadian banks would be barred from transactions with the Russian central bank, and they were prohibiting any direct or indirect dealings in Russian sovereign debt.
