On Thursday morning, Aiden “Johnny” Aslin could have been at home in Nottingham preparing for a normal weekend.

Instead, the 28-year-old was returning to his Ukrainian Army unit and mentally preparing himself to face a full-scale Russian invasion backed by armour, airstrikes, and amphibious assaults.

“I can’t say it is a good feeling,” he said with soldierly stoicism as he hauled his kitbag off the bus bringing him back from leave.

“But I will do what we can to adapt to the situation and overcome it.

“I mean, this was what we signed up for. You go there, you know what the job entails. Like our job basically.”
