Heavy snow and poor visibility have caused schedule disruptions at the Beijing Winter Olympics. With an average snowfall of 4mm (0.16in) recorded on February 13, 2022, several ski slopestyle events had to be postponed. Authorities worked to clear snow and ice from key transport routes to competition venues. Ironically, the Games had been criticised for the event’s negative environmental impact and for being the first Winter Olympics to rely almost entirely on artificial snow. In the skiing event venue Zhangjiakou alone, 192 million gallons (873 million litre) of water is estimated to have been used for snow-making. More snow is forecast, with temperatures in the mountains north of Beijing set to reach -35 degrees Celsius.
