Russia-Ukraine conflict: Trudeau announces sanctions against Vladimir Putin, other measures | LIVE

CA, 26 Feb 2022
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is set to provide an update on Friday on the country's ongoing response to the Russian military attack on Ukraine.

He will be joined by Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland, Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly, Defence Minister Anita Anand, Immigration Minister Sean Fraser, and International Development Minister Harjit Sajjan.

The update comes hours after Trudeau participated in a NATO Leaders meeting on the situation in Ukraine and a day after Trudeau announced more severe sanctions on Russia.

The sanctions will target 58 people and entities connected to Russia, including members of that country's elite and their families, the paramilitary organization known as the Wagner Group and major Russian banks.

The measures, announced Thursday after Trudeau attended a virtual G7 meeting, will also affect members of the Russian Security Council, including key cabinet ministers.

Canada is also cancelling existing export permits for Russia and will not issue new ones.

As of Friday afternoon, most Russian troops were more than 50 kilometres away from Kyiv, according to Britain's defence ministry. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg also said in a press conference that Ukrainian forces were "fighting bravely and are actually able to inflict damage on the invading Russian forces."
