Family of man shot and killed by Calgary police say his death was preventable

CA, 25 Feb 2022
The family of a man killed after being shot by Calgary police officers is speaking out.

Police shot and killed Latjor Tuel in the 4500 block of 17 Avenue S.E. after receiving a weapons complaint on Feb. 19.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team said Tuesday that Tuel, 41, was holding a stick and a knife, adding a witness reported he hit someone with the stick.

Because someone was struck, Neufeld said police were responding to an assault call in a busy public place — not a mental health call.

Latjor Tuel’s daughter, Nyalinglat Latjor, said she is seeking answers and justice for her father after his death on Saturday.

“The last few days have been a nightmare,” she said.

As Adam MacVicar reports, Latjor says she knew of her father’s mental health struggles but she had no idea how severe it had become.
