North Korea faces international condemnation as it confirmed the test firing of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) on March 24, 2022. It was the first time since 2017 that Pyongyang has tested one of the long-range missiles believed to be capable of reaching the United States. North Korean state media said the “new type” of Hwasong-17 missile is the nation’s biggest to date. The test firing has been condemned by Pyongyang’s neighbours including Japan and South Korea, and the United Nations denounced the launch as “a significant escalation of tensions in the region”.
