The Russian invasion of Ukraine has disrupted food supplies, pushing up prices amid the conflict and Western sanctions that prevent cargo from passing through ports as it normally would. With the two countries accounting for 30 per cent of the world’s global wheat exports, the supply disruptions are putting countries that rely on them at risk, particularly in Africa. Egypt is the world’s biggest wheat importer, with 80 per cent of its supply coming from Russia and Ukraine. The UN World Food Programme warned that 1.6 million people are expected to fall into “emergency levels of hunger'' by December 2022 due to the ongoing war.
