China’s relationship with Russia is tested every day that the Russia Ukraine war continues. Prior to Russia invading Ukraine, the two leaders declared a ‘no limits friendship'. As sanctions are placed on Russia following the invasion of Ukraine, Russia is likely to lean on their ally China for many different resources.
The main question is whether China’s president Xi Jinping risks the same sanctions being placed on their own economy, by western countries.
It has been suggested that Xi Jinping, China’s leader is possibly the only ally of Russia who could sway Putin from continuing the war. China’s response could have a huge impact on the outcome of the war.
China’s main priority is to protect it own interests, however, the two leaders will want to continue to support each other especially since the two have a personal friendship. Xi is interested in remaining as strategic partners with Russia as he is looking to form a new international system which benefits them both, as he believes Western leaders have failed.
