COVID-19: "Blanket booster programs” will prolong pandemic, WHO says

CA, 22 Dec 2021
World Health Organization (WHO) director-general Dr. Tedros Adhanom Gebreysus on Wednesday spoke out against “blanket booster programs,” which he said would prolong the pandemic by diverting supply of COVID-19 vaccines from countries with lower vaccine coverage.

The organization has called for a moratorium on COVID-19 booster doses for healthy adults until the end of 2021 to counter inequity in vaccine access.

Addressing questions about the Omicron COVID-19 variant, Dr. Maria Van Kherkhove, COVID-19 technical lead for the WHO Health Emergencies Programme, said information on severity of the virus is “still uncertain” and said it is still too early to conclude whether or not the Omicron variant is less severe than the Delta COVID-19 variant.
