Aid has begun arriving in Tonga following an underwater volcanic eruption and resulting tsunami on January 15, 2022. The eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcano off the coast of the Pacific island nation destroyed villages and covered large parts of the country in ash. Emergency supplies have been brought in from various countries including China, Japan and New Zealand. Drinking water is in short supply as the local water supply has been contaminated by volcanic ash. Three people have been reported killed from the eruption, including a British national, while the number of injuries is not yet confirmed.
