Kentucky tornadoes: Governor provides update as recovery efforts continue | FULL
CA, 14 Dec 2021
Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear held a media briefing Monday on the recovery efforts following a deadly swarm of weekend tornadoes in the state.
Beshear said earlier on Monday that significant debris removal is currently underway as the damage from four tornadoes across 18 counties left "a mountain of waste" and will take months to rebuild. He said there were 64 confirmed deaths as of Monday. The governor also said on Sunday that several of his own family members had died as a result of the tornadoes.
State officials also warned Monday that residents of Kentucky counties where the tornadoes killed several dozen people could be without heat, water or electricity in frigid temperatures for weeks or longer.
Power has been restored to some homes, but around 28,000 still are without. More than 300 members of the National Guard were going door-to-door and removing debris, while teams worked to distribute water and generators.
