La Palma volcano silent for 2nd day, experts optimistic but cautious

CA, 15 Dec 2021
Experts were cautiously optimistic on Wednesday as the Cumbre Vieja volcano on La Palma island in Spain was silent for a second day, with at least one geologist hopeful it could be the end of eruption from the mountain but saying some volcanoes of the past have been quiet for days before reactivating.

The volcano appeared to cease all seismic activity on Monday at 9 p.m. local time, bringing hope among residents that the devastation the mountain has caused since beginning to erupt Sept. 19 may soon be at an end. It's the longest period of time without tremors since the eruption first began.

But while there is optimism, the damage the volcano has caused is still visible in parts of the island with at last 2,910 buildings destroyed, others covered by ash, and the main livelihood of the island -- banana plantations -- devastated.
