A plastics-for-rice exchange programme in Bali is tackling two problems at once by offering residents a way to feed their families by clearing waste from the Indonesian resort island. The scheme set up by a non-profit group in May 2020 has so far resulted in the collection of over 540 tonnes of plastic waste at the same time as it has distributed bags of rice to locals who are struggling as the pandemic keeps away foreign tourists who drive the local economy. Indonesia has been identified as one of the world’s biggest sources of plastic waste that ends up in oceans.
