In a press conference on February 8, 2022, Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor announced the strictest social-distancing measures to tackle the city’s exponential growth in Covid-19 caseloads. The news came as the city recorded a new high in daily cases for the third straight day. In addition to bars and gyms, religious venues and hair salons will temporarily close starting February 10. Public gatherings will also be capped at two while most restaurants will only be allowed two people per table. A new “vaccine pass” will also take effect on February 24, requiring proof of vaccination before entering shopping centres, wet markets and eateries. The tighter restrictions also ban two or more families from gathering at private premises. As of February 8, 2022, the city has confirmed 15,063 Covid-19 cases and 213 deaths.
