Witnesses in the village of Atmeh, in northwest Syria, described the sounds of airplanes and machine guns during a U.S. special forces operation that was carried out on Thursday.

The raid resulted in the death of ISIS leader Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi, President Joe Biden said.

Helicopters landed and heavy gunfire and explosions were heard during the raid that began around midnight in the Atmeh village area near the Turkish border, residents said.

Several residents said at least 12 people were killed during the raid.

Thursday's operation appeared to be the largest of its kind by U.S. forces in the northwest since Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi died in a U.S. special operations raid in 2019, said Charles Lister, senior fellow with the Washington-based Middle East Institute.
