The People’s Liberation Army’s special Gamba frontier defence battalion is stationed in one of the most remote corners of China – along the southwestern border with India, Nepal and Bhutan. The soldiers regularly patrol areas more than 6,000 metres (20,000ft) above sea level, scaling mountains and glaciers along the way.
