“Listen to the stories of survivors” as we mark Truth and Reconciliation Day, Trudeau says
CA, 30 Sep 2021
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau encouraged Canadians to listen to Indigenous people when they share their experiences in residential schools, and other areas, as we come together on Thursday to mark the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation.
“Take a moment to listen to the stories of a survivor, to an Indigenous elder, who shares their perspective and their experiences in this country and know that that story – their story – is your story as well,” he said.
Trudeau said during a ceremony in Ottawa on Wednesday that the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation is a day not just for Indigenous people, but for all Canadians to reflect on the mistreatment of Indigenous peoples and the lasting intergenerational trauma from residential schools.
He asked Canadians to reflect on “the stories we tell” about ourselves as Canadians.
