Boris Johnson admits food shortages could last into Christmas
Telegraph, 03 Oct 2021
Boris Johnson has admitted that fuel and food shortages could last into Christmas, as he appeared to shrug off concerns that farmers would have to cull their animals.
As the Conservative Party conference kicks off, fears are growing that the food and fuel shortages are worsening, despite repeated promises that it would be resolved. Poultry and pig farmers have warned that staff shortages at processing plants will leave them having to slaughter and incinerate their animals, exacerbating the issues with empty shelves.
In a pre-conference interview Rishi Sunak, the Chancellor, said the shortages were "very real" and could not rule out the possibility of the issue lasting months, telling the Daily Mail: "My kids will be very upset with me if there isn’t a proper Christmas."
Asked about these comments this morning, the Prime Minister told the BBC's Andrew Marr Show: "Rishi is right invariably."
