An entire village of people were held hostage by Russian forces in a school basement in Yahidne, Ukraine, and told that they were to be “sent to Siberia to gut fish”, The Telegraph's Danielle Sheridan reports.
The squalid shelter became home to 380 people for a month. Villagers were kept underground with no daylight before being rescued by Ukrainian forces.
The room shown in the video housed 37 people and bears wall markings they made out of crayon to keep track of time in the darkness. 12 people died while imprisoned due to lack of ventilation.
According to those who survived, Russian soldiers robbed nearby homes – stealing everything from pillows and microwaves to underwear and money – and mined the whole village.
