In January, Shanghai had the smallest closed-off area in the world - a 20-square-meter milk tea shop. It closed when three employees tested positive for COVID-19 but the danger passed quickly. Three months later, the entire city is in "classified management mode" because of Omicron. Over a dozen lives have been lost. Two to three thousand new cases are reported daily together with over ten thousand asymptomatic ones. China pursues a dynamic zero-COVID policy, which means tracing and suppressing the virus as fast as possible. Is there a gap between policies and implementation? What is life really like on the ground and what's the impact on society? Why is China not changing its mind yet?
