Torrential rains have been battering southern and central China since May 8, 2022, as rescuers struggle to reach residents stranded by severe flooding. With more heavy rain forecast, China’s State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters on May 11 raised its emergency flood control response to level 3. China has a four-tier flood-control emergency response system, with level 1 being the most severe.
