Scientists unveiled an image of a supermassive black hole at the centre of the Milky Way galaxy called Sagittarius A*, on May 12, 2022. This is only the second black hole to have been captured in a direct image. The feat was accomplished using the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), an international collaboration that also captured the first-ever photo of a black hole residing at the heart of another galaxy in 2019.
