Boris Johnson has said Britons had the "right to expect better" as he confirmed he had paid his 'partygate' fine in full.

Mr Johnson, his wife Carrie, and Chancellor Rishi Sunak on Tuesday received fixed penalty notices over events held in Downing Street during lockdown.

In an address to the public at Chequers, Mr Johnson said "it did not occur to me" that a gathering in the Cabinet room on June 19, 2020 for his birthday "might have been a breach" of the strict Covid rules at the time.

"I understand the anger that many will feel that I myself fell short when it came to observing the very rules that the Government I lead had introduced to protect the public," he said. "I accept in all sincerity that people had the right to expect better.

Repeating his apology to the British people but refusing to resign, Mr Johnson insisted he was "focussing 100 per cent on delivering our agenda".

"I want to get on and deliver the mandate that I have but also tackle the problems that the country must face right now and get on with delivering for the people of this country. That is my priority."
