Texas school shooting: Death toll rises to at least 21 as investigation into gunman continues

CA, 25 May 2022
The death toll in the Tuesday shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, has risen to at least 21 people after authorities said 19 students and two teachers had been killed. A member of the suspect's family was also reportedly killed.

It has been reported that at least one teacher taken to hospital survived surgery, but it is not yet known if the death toll could still increase as there remain other people injured.

According to police, it's believed the gunman acted alone and crashed his car outside the school before going inside armed. He also reportedly killed his grandmother before heading to the school, with what state Sen. Roland Gutierrez said were assault-style rifles he had purchased on his birthday. Uvalde's district chief of police Pedro "Pete" Arredondo confirmed the suspect is dead. He is said to have been a student at Uvalde High School and is a U.S. citizen.

The shooting is the latest in the U.S. and comes just over a week after 10 people were killed in a shooting at a supermarket in Buffalo, N.Y. It is also the second-deadliest school shooting in the U.S. on record, next to Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012, where 20 children and six adults were killed in Newtown, Conn.
