US President Joe Biden called for a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines in an impassioned address to the nation on Thursday night, as America reels from a series of mass shootings.

In a rare prime time address, Mr Biden pleaded with Republican senators to at least allow for debate on gun reform, as he asked: “How much more carnage are we willing to accept? How many more innocent American lives must be taken before we say enough?"

There have been more than 230 mass shootings - where four or more people are killed or injured by guns in a single incident - in 2022 so far.

In just the last three weeks, 10 people were murdered in a supermarket in Buffalo, New York, 19 schoolchildren were shot dead along with two teachers in Uvalde, Texas and four people were killed at a hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma by a man who bought an assault rifle just hours earlier.

Standing in the White House in front of 56 candles representing the victims of gun violence in all US states and territories, Mr Biden set out a number of practical proposals to try and reduce the number of tragedies.

“We need to ban assault weapons and high capacity magazines,” he said.

“And if we can’t ban assault weapons, then we should raise the age to purchase them from 18 to 21 and strengthen the background checks.”
