Texas school shooting: Governor Abbott speaks with reporters after cancelling NRA appearance | LIVE

CA, 27 May 2022
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is expected to hold a news conference in Uvalde on Friday as the National Rifle Association's (NRA) convention begins in Texas, just days after a shooting at Robb Elementary School left at least 21 people dead, including 19 students.

Abbott was supposed to attend the convention and had not signalled a change to his planned attendance up until the evening before the convention. His office released a press release Thursday night saying he would be holding a news conference at Uvalde High School at the same time he was set to speak in Houston. According to reports, he will be sending a pre-recorded video to the summit instead of appearing in person.

Victor Escalon, state Department of Public Safety South Texas regional director, provided an update Thursday on the investigation into the Robb Elementary School mass shooting and provided a detailed timeline on how the tragedy unfolded.

He also confirmed that the gunman's grandmother was alive and stable after previous reports that he killed her. He requested patience as the investigation continues, stressing they want to provide facts and not deal with rumours.

Law enforcement is facing criticism over how they handled the shooting rampage by the gunman who killed 19 children and two teachers amid reports that witnesses of the Uvalde school shooting had urged police to charge into the building sooner than they had.
