Shirley Ballesberos came to Hong Kong from the Philippines in 1995 to work as a domestic helper to support her two young sons back home. After her contract was terminated in 2007, she tried to sue her employer and ended up seeking asylum after overstaying her visa. For the last nine years, she and her daughter have been waiting for their asylum applications to be screened. Unable to work, she fills her days volunteering for the grassroots organisation Refugee Union, which helps to empower other asylum seekers in the city, including through crochet classes.
