New York Governor Kathy Hochul is expected to deliver remarks on Sunday as she visits the Chautauqua Institution in western New York, the nonprofit education and retreat centre where author Salman Rushdie was attacked two days ago.

Rushdie's agent earlier on Sunday confirmed that he was "on the road to recovery," now removed from a ventilator and able to talk after having suffered serious stabbing injuries.

Rushdie’s 1988 book “The Satanic Verses” was banned in Iran, where the late leader Grand Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini issued a 1989 fatwa, or edict, calling for Rushdie’s death.

Often-violent protests against Rushdie erupted around the world, including a riot that killed 12 people in Mumbai. Khomeini died that same year.
