After at least four people drowned in basement homes during the worst storm to lash Seoul in more than a century, the South Korean capital has announced plans to phase out the dwellings that have come to symbolise yawning inequality since one was featured in the Oscar-winning Korean film Parasite. A government statement issued August 10, 2022, said Seoul authorities are considering a ban on construction of homes that are below ground or semi-underground. Thousands of residents are believed to live the estimated more than 200,000 subterranean homes around the capital city.
