Fires spread and drought takes hold in parts of UK amid heatwave
Telegraph, 14 Aug 2022
Parts of the UK experienced sizzling temperatures over the weekend, with highs of over 33C.
A large fire thought to have been caused by a disposable campsite barbecue in Studland, Dorset created havoc on Saturday.
Drought conditions along with the extreme heat have heightened the risk of wildfires.
An official drought was declared in eight areas of England on Friday by the National Drought Group (NDG), which comprises representatives from the Government, water companies, the Environment Agency (EA) and others.
Three water companies – Welsh Water, Southern Water, and South East Water – have all imposed hosepipe bans, while Yorkshire Water has announced a ban will start on August 26 and Thames Water is planning one in the coming weeks.
Farmers have said that half their crops could fail.
From Monday, temperatures are expected to ease with the start of thundery showers.
