Iran has denied involvement in the bloody attack that critically wounded British author Salman Rushdie, blaming instead the British writer and his supporters. A spokesman for Iran’s Foreign Ministry made the claims on August 15, 2022, more than two days after the attack in New York state. Rushdie sustained multiple injuries, including damage to the liver and an eye, when a Lebanese-born American resident allegedly assaulted him during an August 12 literary event. The award-winning author’s novel The Satanic Verses angered some in the Islamic world for its portrayal of the Prophet Muhammad. In 1989, Iran’s late Supreme leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini issued fatwa, or Islamic edict, demanding Rushdie’s death. The writer spent years under police protection and had only recently started moving around more freely.
