Death of a 'much-loved' monarch marks 'beginning of a new reign and the proclamation of a new king'

FRANCE24, 11 Sep 2022
As the British people say goodbye to Queen Elizabeth II, a "much-loved" monarch, and welcome in her son, King Charles III, FRANCE 24 is joined by Dr. Nigel Fletcher, Teaching Fellow in Politics and Contemporary History at King's College in London, who explains the historical significance: "It is absolutely a huge historic moment. It's 70 years since we've had a transition to a new reign, so most people in the UK will not have experienced this before." And while the United Kingdom has witnessed royal deaths in modern times, including Diana and the Queen Mother, Dr. Fletcher asserts that "this really is different. It's not just the death of a much-loved and long-serving sovereign. It's also the beginning of a new reign and the proclamation of the new King."
