Queen Elizabeth: A monarch bound to duty during her 70-year reign
CA, 10 Sep 2022
Duty. It’s the quality that many believe has most steered Queen Elizabeth II throughout her 70 years of reign, and it might be the characteristic she was most known for since the day of her coronation oath.
One exception was made following the 1997 death of Diana, Princess of Wales, when the Queen chose family above duty — much to the vicious criticism from the public and press alike. Choosing to stay at Balmoral Castle, a residence of the British royal family, the late monarch opted to look after her two grandsons, 15-year-old William and 12-year-old Harry.
It was only when she returned and paid tribute to Diana that people started reflecting on why she had chosen to do so, and realized she did the right thing in putting family above duty — in a rare re-order of obligations.
Even with the death of her husband Prince Philip, who she was married to for 73 years, she did not choose to grieve publicly. Most remembered of this moment might be her solitary figure sitting in St. George’s chapel with a face mask on, separated from the rest of the family due to pandemic precautions.
In a Global exclusive, Dawna Friesen speaks with former palace press secretary Dickie Arbiter on his fond memories of the Queen — and the burdens placed on her shoulders.
