A zoo in northeastern Pakistan plans to put some of its lions up for auction on August 11, 2022, in a move meant to free up space and cut costs. Officials at the Lahore Safari Zoo said buyers can bid for 12 of its 29 lions starting at a base price of 150,000 rupees (US$670). The zoo’s lion enclosure has a capacity of 20 animals, and is so overcrowded that lions and tigers must take turns accessing the open paddocks. Conservationists raised concerns about the proposed sale, saying that without proper monitoring the private ownership of wild animals could increase the risk that the lions could suffer abuse or die.
