Ramaphosa visits White House: For South Africa, 'America's attention has been elsewhere'
FRANCE24, 16 Sep 2022
President Joe Biden on Friday will welcome South African leader Cyril Ramaphosa to the White House, part of a renewed US courting of the developing world power after its caution in condemning Russia. The visit by Ramaphosa comes a month after US Secretary of State Antony Blinken made his own trip to South Africa, where he vowed that the United States will do more to listen to Africans. For more analysis on Ramaphosa's visit to the White House, FRANCE 24 is joined by Christopher Vandome, Research Fellow with the Chatham House Africa Programme. "The visit is strategically important for both sides. For the US, it is about reengaging with South Africa in a more productive way," explains Mr. Vandome. "I think that the visit today is a direct follow-up to Blinken's visit to South Africa within the past month that was part of a strategic visit following a realization by the United States that it doesn't have South Africa as close a friend as it thought."
