In the first half of 2022, more than 1.6 million Indian tourists visited the country’s disputed region of Kashmir, which is claimed by both Pakistan and India. India has advertised the area to become one of its premier getaway destinations. In early 2021, the local tourism department launched a big-budget campaign, promoting the region’s Himalayan scenery, snow-covered towns and remote Hindu shrines. Authorities also plan to open a ski resort and other “untapped destinations” for tourists.
