Brazil election: Candidates rally supporters day before hotly contested vote

CA, 02 Oct 2022
Brazil’s leftist candidate and election frontrunner, Luis Inacio Lula da Silva, held a rally on Saturday in the streets of Sao Paulo as a final campaign event before the election. From a convertible car and accompanied by Sao Paulo’s governor, Fernando Haddad, Lula celebrated a silent rally, named this way as candidates are not allowed to ask for the citizens’ vote.

Meanwhile, Brazil’s incumbent far-right President and presidential candidate, Jair Bolsonaro, led his popular thundering “motociatas” or motorcycle convoys on Saturday.

A poll released on Saturday by MDA showed Bolsonaro has chipped away at half of Lula's lead, which is now down to 7.9 percentage points. Brazil's most polarized election in decades will decide whether to return to power a former president who spent time in jail on corruption convictions or a right-wing populist who has attacked the voting system and threatened to contest defeat.

Lula, a former union leader who governed Brazil from 2003 through 2010, has pledged to revive the generous social spending programs that marked his first mandate, while beefing up environmental enforcement and better protecting marginalized groups.
