Work on human evolution nabs Sweden's Svante Pääbo the Nobel Prize in Medicine

CA, 04 Oct 2022
The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded Monday to Swedish geneticist Svante Pääbo for discoveries in human evolution that underpin the understanding of how modern-day humans evolved from extinct ancestors.

"I initially thought it was a joke actually, that it was my research group who made an elaborate joke," said Pääbo, who is also the director of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany. "But then it sounded a little too convincing, but it was hard to digest immediately."

Pääbo, who is also son of the Nobel Prize-winning biochemist Sune Bergstrom, has been credited with transforming the study of human origins after developing approaches to allow for the examination of DNA sequences from archaeological and paleontological remains.
