Storm Fiona: Nova Scotia premier provides an update after Atlantic Canada battered | LIVE

CA, 25 Sep 2022
Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston is expected to provide an update on Sunday, after post-tropical storm Fiona hammered Atlantic Canada and has moved inland in southeastern Quebec. Environment Canada says the storm will continue to weaken as it tracks across southeastern Labrador and over the Labrador Sea.

As of 6 a.m. local time, nearly 267,000 Nova Scotia Power customers were still affected by outages, 82,414 Maritime Electric customers remained in the dark and more than 20,600 homes and businesses in New Brunswick were without power, with some provincial utility companies warning it could be days before the lights are back on for everyone.

John Lohr, minister responsible for Nova Scotia’s Office of Emergency Management, said Saturday afternoon that he has reached out to federal Public Safety Minister Bill Blair to request disaster financial assistance as storm Fiona pummels eastern Canada, which he said he’s been assured “will be coming very soon.”

During a briefing yesterday, Houston said restoring power to those impacted by the storm is the “biggest concern.” He said nearly three-quarters of Nova Scotia Power customers are without electricity in the wake of the storm, while Newfoundland Power reported outages have affected more than 3,600 customers after high-end tropical storm force winds knocked down trees and power lines.
