Biden says he's considering declaring public health emergency for abortion access

CA, 11 Jul 2022
U.S. President Joe Biden said Sunday that he was considering whether to declare a public health emergency to free up federal health resources to promote abortion access. However, he advised he had only asked medical officials in his administration to determine if he had that authority– and what impact it would have.

Asked about protesters who gathered outside the White House recently in support of abortion access, Biden called on them to "keep protesting."

"Keep making your point," he said. "It's critically important."

The president added that there were several things that could be done to accommodate women "in the meantime," but the only way to get things to change would be if a national law reinstated the Roe v. Wade ruling that was overturned more than two weeks ago by the Supreme Court, sending decisions on abortion access back to individual states. Since then, trigger bans have come into effect in a number of U.S. states limiting abortion access, while other states had laws predating Roe v. Wade already on the books.
