Roe v. Wade overturned: Supreme Court 'saying that history & tradition determine' constitutionality

FRANCE24, 28 Jun 2022
The Supreme Court has ended constitutional protections for abortion that had been in place nearly 50 years in a decision by its conservative majority to overturn Roe v. Wade. Friday's outcome is expected to lead to abortion bans in roughly half the states. For more analysis on the legal implications of this ruling joining FRANCE 24 is Stephen Dreyfuss, former President of the Paris-based Union Internationale des Avocats (International Association of Lawyers). "We have the unusual situation, and the very disturbing one to many in this country, that the availability of an abortion to women in 2022 and forward is going to be determined by what the founding fathers had in their minds in the 18th century and what the country was doing in the 19th century," explains Mr. Dreyfuss. "And that seems fundamentally wrong to many people in this country, but that is the direction the court is going." Highlighting both the gun rights and abortion rights rulings over the past couple of days, he says that the conservative justices are reinforcing the Second Amendment right to bear arms and overturning the constitutional right to an abortion.
