1. Democrats in the U.S. Senate said they were encouraged by talks with Republicans on firearms legislation, but warned that any compromise would fall well short of all the steps they say are needed to curb gun violence.

2. Ukrainian troops holding out in the ruins of Sievierodonetsk came under renewed heavy assault from Russian forces who see the capture of the industrial city as key to control of the surrounding Luhansk region.

3. A police officer hurt by Donald Trump supporters trying to overturn his election defeat and a filmmaker who recorded some leaders of the U.S. Capitol riot will be among the first witnesses when hearings into the assault begin, organizers said.

4. South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem, a staunch ally of former President Donald Trump, easily won the Republican nomination to seek reelection in November, while a former member of Trump's cabinet was locked in a tight race in his Montana primary for the U.S. House of Representatives.

5. Turkey's foreign minister said a United Nations plan to ease a global food crisis by restarting Ukrainian grain exports along a sea corridor was "reasonable," and requires more talks with Moscow and Kyiv to ensure ships' safety.
