Ukrainian first lady Olena Zelenska made an emotional appeal to US lawmakers on July 20, 2022, for Washington to supply more weapons to help Kyiv fight Russian invasion forces. The wife of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also described the war as “Russia’s ‘Hunger Games’,” in reference to a series of novels and movies in which people hunt one another. On the same day, US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin told journalists that he had authorised the shipment of four additional Himars advanced rocket systems to Ukraine, bringing the total to 16. The US has already provided about US$8 billion in security assistance to Ukraine since the war began in February.
